COMPASS ROSE

Compass Rose by Jim Sawada, Toronto, Canada

I never know what might come along. Never thought I'd be involved in floors. But so it goes.

Kathy's nephew, James Marohnic (Atikokan, Ontario) is an accomplished tradesman. One of his specialties is unique custom floors which involve intricate wood patterns and are secured with screws and wood plugs. He wanted to be able to offer a compass rose for an inlay.

We worked out a design involving Black Walnut and Bird's Eye Maple. It's an intricate piece of work, with 16 pieces that must precisely fit. Each compass rose is about four feet from tip to tip of the long points (N-S, E-W). The colour contrast gives a three-dimensional effect to the compass rose.

I was blown away when I saw the installed piece. Nice work James!
